I spent thousands on "natural" healing, exercised, ate properly and gave attention to my spiritual life. Didn't fix me. Write about something you understand. Most people here have already tried everything else out of desperation for peace. Also, don't assume everyone here even takes meds. We're not all the same. Different treatments for different people. If you're so sure of this guarantee, and want to help, why not provide your name and addy for folks to obtain more info? A long list of alternative remedies which s/he encouraged us all to take. What he didn't say was that nobody should ever take such remedies without first checking out all the possible side-effects or drug interactions of such substances. "Help" has no idea what medications we might be taking or what medical conditions we might suffer from. While I don't doubt that s/he believes that s/he is helping others by posting this, what s/he is actually doing is exposing others to possible danger and health problems by recommending so emphatically that we should all follow this regime without first checking out each substance. Just because a substance is "natural" doesn't mean it is safe. Some are, some aren't, depending on what else we might take or suffer from. http://www.Depressiondepot.net, referring to natural remedies and supplements: "You should never take any medication or supplement without providing a full medical history, including current medications, to your doctor and pharmacist. Some supplements can be fatal if used in conjunction with prescription medications, or other supplements." "people should not exceed 1,200 mg daily without a doctors recommendation. Can have side-effect of headache, hyperstimulation in some. It is also a fact that people who have PKU (phenylketonuria) should nottake DLPA, as they do not have the enzyme that metabolizes it." People who are taking SSRIs (especially Wellbutrin and Zoloft) should exercise caution in taking 5-htp. It can result in an overdose of serotonin which has extremely unpleasant side-effects. "Studies suggest that like other antidepressants, it may trigger manic episodes in people with bipolar disorder..... A key concern is that depressed patients will drop other treatments to try SAMe, and end up suicidal..... And because SAMe is absorbed mainly through the intestine, it's best taken in "enteric coated" tablets that pass through the stomach intact." Don't take if you: 1. Have pernicious anemia (Folic acid will make the blood appear normal, but neurological problems may progress and be irreversible.)
2. Take anticonvulsant medication Consult your doctor if you:
1. Have anemia
2. Are taking methotrexate, which is a chemotherapy that is given as a treatment for some types of cancer. > Get yeast free selenium from selenomethionine and take 200mg with one of
> your meals for extra selenium. According to Medline: "The suggested intake by nutrition experts is 50 to 200 MICROGRAMS for adults. Excess selenium intake can cause problems with the strength of teeth and the tooth enamel. Other problems may include loss of teeth, hair, and nails. Skin inflammation, nausea, and fatigue can also occur." CNN interactive: "One problem is that very high levels of selenium can be harmful, causing nails and hair to become brittle. It is likely to cause diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, increased urination, headaches and possibly anaemia. Mega doses of Vitamin C are also suspected to cause kidney stones. It is also likely to interact with barbiturates, anticholinergics and tetracycline. Patients taking warfarin, a blood-thinning medication, should never exceed the RDA of 60mg for vitamin C. Apart from the possible side effects, the body can't store Vitamin C. It takes what it needs and the rest passes into the urine. This means that much of what you'd be taking would be going straight down the toilet. The Wellness Newsletter of Santa Clara University CA: VITAMIN C OVERDOSE: "How much vitamin C is too much? This powerful antioxidant can be a double-edged sword. While vitamin C protects cell from damage by free radicals, researchers at the University of Leicester have discovered it can also encourage free radical damage. Thirty volunteers received 500 mg. of vitamin C daily for six weeks. Their blood was drawn before the study, twice during the study, and again, after the study ended. The researchers were looking for 8-oxoguanine and 8-oxoadenine. High levels of these two substances indicate damage to cells from free radicals. After six weeks, they found that while levels of 8-oxoguanine dropped, levels of 8-oxoadenine increased. From this, they concluded that doses greater than 500 mg/day are not safe and recommend no more than 200 mg/day.
(Health Magazine, July/August 1999) You cannot guarantee any results at all. Any positive effects of all these substances, individually or combined will vary enormously from person to person. The side effects will also vary. They worked for you and you haven't apparently suffered any side effects. That's great - for you. But please don't make false claims to other people when you have absolutely no idea what medication they might be taking or medical conditions they might have that might interact with what you're suggesting here. You say people should stop toxic psychiatric drugs. That's all very well, but what about medication they might be taking for other conditions? I take propranolol (Inderal) for migraine and large doses of NSAIDs for a prolapsed lumbar disc. Both these can interact with melatonin. Melatonin can also have seriously adverse effects on epileptics, arthritics, MS ...
