Question:
Has anyone tried the home study from Midwest Center in Ohio called "Attacking
Anxiety and Depression"? Did it help you? I have 30 days to decide whether to
keep it or not and it is expensive.
Answer:
I bought the program sometime ago and it wasn't what I had hoped it
would have been.[i.e. "the cure"]. It may very well help some in regards to
general anxiety, so I guess it really depends on wheather you want to spent the
money for the program [or have the money to spend for this sort of thing].
There are those who swear by it and others that do not. As for myself, I
thought it somewhat a waste of money which I usually have little of. I was
particularly amused at how "her psychologist" said those who use benzos' didn't
seem to get any better. In fairness, if I had it to do over I wouldn't buy the
program. You can get it at eBay sometimes for a lot less than the price they ask which now
has gone up to $ 350.- if I'm, not mistaken. It's probably also at your local
library. Basically it's some watered down CBT and some relaxation tapes. Many
people like it though.
Personally I would rather buy Edmund J. Bourne, The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook, an
excellent self-help manual (why, as a matter of fact I *did* buy it some years ago
;)) It's available at www.amazon.com I have that book you mentioned and I love it!!!! I LOVE THAT
EDMUND! LOL Do you have the first or revised edition? The first one, I believe (not sure). Bourne is rather ambigious about meds.
The funny thing is that when his next book was published ("Healing Fear") he
stated in the foreword that he himself had not been able to get his PAD under
control with only behavioural and nutritional means but was now also taking
meds...
Just our experience, I think: the best way to go is living a healthy life,
doing CBT, taking meds and practicing some *alternative* disciplines that suit
us (yoga, meditation, whatever). Did you know that it is very hard to be anxious when trying balance on
one leg while trying to lift the other one out behind you as far as it
will go?!! It kind of occupied my brain for awhile and I forgot I was
anxious as I valiantly tried to balance my "full figured" frame on one
leg and gracefully extend the other one behind me. I started yoga
classes last week. I signed up when I was especially desperate to try
ANYTHING to help me manage my symptoms. It is going well over all.
The instructor fooled me the first night with lots of stretching and
breathing exercises, and I thought it would be a piece of cake. The
second night involved holding very unnatural positions for
excruciatingly long periods of time (15 seconds!). My sister bought it for my father after he had an "episode". He didn't
put forth any effort, so my mom tried it. It was great for her because
she didn't realize that there was a whole secret society of us out
there. I tried it, but I was too anxious to get through it.
Ironically, the tapes made me nervous because it was just a bunch of
people talking with no particular point.
HOWEVER, if you have an opportunity to try it out for a couple of weeks
and still get your money back, why not go for it? You are the only one
who can say for sure if it will be helpful to you personally. It was when I read the book written by the founder of the mid wst center that I
decided that I would and could fight this monster and win. The book entitled,
"from Panic to power" was a turning point for me. REALLY! No joke . I know
that her program works. i did not buy the program. I just requested her free
video and used her book as the "anxiety and panic bible" That was good enough
for me. I still keep her book close by when I need the extra support. You
won't waste your money to keep the program. I am sure of that!!!!
