Question:
I am a long term periodic sufferer of depression, sleeplessness, irritability, no energy, suicidal thoughts. I am currently at my lowest that I have experienced in my life and could really use some advice on treatment involving nutrition.
I wish to take a nutritional approach and could use some advice on what to supplement with on a daily basis or how to alter my diet?
Some info about me: I am a vegetarian, intake a wide variety of foods, and get ample iron and protein intake. I am already supplementing daily with a general multi-vitamin, 300 mg each of calcium & magnesium, and 100 mg B-Complex.
I have in the past tried various remedies such as licorice root, st. john's wort, valarian root, melatonin, golden seal etc. I have found that none of these things have worked for me.
Is there a nutritional program out there that works?

he problem is that there are "too many" potentially effective nutritional/supplemental approaches to treating depression to do more than mention some of them here, but you need a lot more info than that in order to choose and use them wisely and safely. At the risk of sounding self-serving, my best advice to you would be to get a hold of my book and/or other books that cover much or most of this territory (do a search at www.amazon.com and you'll get a bunch of titles), like psychiatrist Michael Norden's _Beyond Prozac_ and naturopath Michael Murray's _Natural Alternatives to Prozac_. Also, don't discount non-nutritional approaches (exercise, acupuncture, cognitive- behavioral psychotherapy...) and (yes) drugs, if need be. And ask your doctor to check you out physically for any of the dozens of illnesses that could be causing or contributing to your depression.
