Answer:
Because all the ECT activists have gotten ECT taken out of the public
state mental hospitals and because its expensive to get, ECT has gradually
become the depression treatment for the affluent. People who get ECT are more likely
to be white, have private health insurance and affluent. Poor and non white
depressives are unlikely to have ECT. Eric draws conclusions unwarranted by the facts. All the article says
is that well off people get more ECT. ECT administration is quite an
unknown factor, however because the psychiatric industry has managed to
quash efforts to require ECT reporting except in Texas, California, and
Vermont.

The article also does not address the great incentives for shock jocks
to cherry pick well off patients.
Since there are no reliable figures on the total administration of ECT
in the United States we can not determine if the poor are under served,
or if the middle class and well off are over treated for the great
profits which ECT can bring.
All in all a useless article in the year 2002, and somewhat dubious even
upon it's publication utilizing five year old data. Yeah, sure, I am. I draw anthropological conclusions on data even older
all the time, call it "archaeology" and/or "history." Of course, I
wouldn't use it to draw conclusions directly about current situations,
but the past and the present are not exactly unconnected. Don't let your
enthusiasm overcome your facts here.
