| Depression Bipolar Medication |
Question: I was perscribed zoloft for my depression and ocd behavior and klonpins
for my anxiety attacks..here is the deal though...as we all know zoloft
takes a while to kick in so in the meantime I am depressed as hell...I
find myself so depressed I do not want to do anything speak to anyone
do my work or anything at all(I feel hopeless)..I feel like I need to
drink just to feel good...this usually ends up happening at the end of
the day(say 5:00 in the evening)..Is it possible that my doctor can
give me something to ease the pain/depression I deal with untill the
zoloft kicks in or something(if it ever does of course)...can he
perscribe some kind of pain killer(percocet ect.. to give me peace of
mind untill the anti depressant meds work....are pychiatrist allowed to
perscribe narcotics for depression?
Answer: They can, but they almost never do. You might have better luck if you asked
about a stimulant such as Ritalin to take as needed until the Zoloft starts
helping. (A problem with Ritalin is it might exacerbate the OCD, but it
tends to help with depression.)
If you really think that opioids would help you, you might ask about a small
prescription for something like codeine, making it clear that you won't
abuse it and that it's only for the short term.
Can I ask why pain killers came to mind? Have you taken them before and
found that they brought you out of your depression? Something that might be
of interest to you is tramadol (Ultram), which is a weak opioid that also is
a serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. Some people find it very
helpful for depression and OCD. Unfortunately, I think it interacts with
Zoloft in a potentially dangerous way; also, if you have a history of
seizures or addictions, your doc will probably be especially reluctant to
prescribe it. (He/she will probably be reluctant anyway; aside from concerns
about abuse potential, it's an uncommon and off-label use for tramadol.)
