Question: Anyone taking a non-sedating medicaton for depression and anxiety? I
take effexor. Have tried paxil, zoloft, prozac, imiprimine, and
elavil. (several others I have forgotten). I am looking to get on
something even a MAO that will help. Don't like anything that sedates
me.
Answer: Neither Effexor nor Prozac are sedating, they are at the stimulating end
of the AD spectrum. MAOI's are very good meds but they usually *are* more
sedating. The most stimulating AD is Wellbutrin but, whatever its merits
for depression, it rarely works well for anxiety sufferers as it seems to
exacerbate existing anxiety.
Most benzos are somewhat sedating but our reaction to that is rather
indvidual and most people (excluding me re Xanax %&$#!) get tolerant to
the sedating - though not to the anxiolytic - effect after a while.
