Question:
I am an 18 year old male with chronic depression and have been diagnosed
with GAD.
I am 5'11" and have a medium frame, but here is my problem. I weigh 110
lbs. and am still losing weight. I currently take remeron for
depression, which is known also to increase appetite and cause with
gain. I have also been taking the mass building supplements available at
GNC daily. Nothing seems to help. If anyone has any suggestions or
previous experience, I would be grateful to hear from you?
Answer:
I'm sorry to hear about your problem. That is quite thin. Have you spoken
to your doctor about this? Is your appetite all right? How about energy or
activity level?
I have a tendency to stop eating and / or lose weight when I am depressed,
also, but not as dramatically as you seem to be doing.
I really hope you can find a solution.
While many people with depression do eat more and gain weight, you,
like me, have the opposite symptom. Any change in the amount you eat - more,
or less - is a symptom of depression. Other medications you might try adding on to increase your appetite are
tricyclics and Zyprexa (an antipsychotic/antianxiety drug).
Finally, I would recommend seeing a physician about it to rule out other
causes.
I am with Kathleen on this. Talk to your doctor about this. If he
cannot help you get him to refer you to a nutrishionist, or someone who can
help you. I lost 10 pounds in 2 weeks the last bad bout I had. What I have
found is that I was caused a lot of stress by it. Therefore I threw my
scale out. Today at the doctors office I had gained 3 pounds! YMMV.
