Question:
my 9 yr old son was diagnosed with post dramatic stress disorder and
possible depression. both my wife and I agree on the diagnose of pdsd but
disagree on the depression. the phychiatrist after see us for one hr. and a
brief chat with my son teacher who explained to him that he displays anger
in the classroom wants to put him on prozac. my wife thinks we should and I
don't
I'm not sure what to look for in a child with depression, would it be the
same as in a adult? then is prozac right for pdsd.Right now he isn't displaying any of the symptoms of childhood depression
or anxiety although I believe stress could cause it in him again as long as
the severity and length of depression-anxiety decrease, I think it in his
best interest to learn how to handle the stress better
Answer:
am wary of psychoactive meds for one so young when the brain hasn't
fully developed yet. Sometimes there may be no choice but behavioral
therapy seems the first thing to try to me. As for the diagnosis, ask
for a second opinion. The below web page describes childhood depression, the symptoms, what to
look for, and treatment options, including the latest research on use of
meds. Hope it helps.
