Question:
I am a mother of a 6 year old child who has bipolar disorder. A mental
illness. Why is it so hard to get any type of assistance for it?
Because it is unseen it must not be real? My child has sever depression,
hyper active, short attention span, sever mood swings, liver, thyroid, and
blood problems. But finding a support group is impossable in souther
illinois. Social Security is saying she is fine. After 3 months of work
I am finaly getting her in to special ed at school. Yet adults and
children treat her like she is the worst thing to happen. Adults put her
down. Just because they can not see that she has an illness. Do you have
any ideals to help me? She goes to a psychiatrist evey two weeks and a
councler every two weeks. I drive her two hours away for these services.
I sure could use your opinions...
Answer:
The last three things you mention are probably the key. I'd suggest a
proper evaluation by a physisian (_not_ a shrink, though!) Likely
these conditions can be treated and eliminated (or at least
stabilized) w/o resorting to the use of medically unprovable and
socially destructive designations such as 'bipolar disorder'.I'd agree that the first thing to do is visit the doctor. The physical
problems should be dealt with first. I'd disagree with the statement
"medically unprovable and socially destructive designations such as 'bipolar
disorder'." I know a number of otherwise health people who are treated for
bipolar with medication and are _much_ happier. So goes my experiance.
I would however question the use of said medication on minors
