Is there a published list of anti anxiety/depression medicines? I am having no response to anti-anxiety agents.

Question:
Is there a published list of anti anxiety/depression medicines? I am having no response to anti-anxiety agents. So far I have tried two substances that are supposed to have powerful anti-anxiety and sociabilizing properties: Kava Kava and GHB. Has anyone else here had a similar experience? Have you found something that did work? Alcohol does work for me but I don't like it. I haven't tried benzodiazepines yet.

Answer:
If you're looking for something to treat occasional performance anxiety, try a beta-blocker like propranolol at a low dose. BZDs are first choice meds for anxiety disorders. So are antidepressants or a combo of both. *And* Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT, especially useful for social anxiety disorder.) Find a pdoc for medication and a therapist for CBT. Kava struck me as unremarkable - perhaps in a person who has never taken anything, such as the islanders who use it, it's the best thing since sliced bread, I don't know. I get the best relaxation results from benzodiazepines, I found that they all worked reasonably well, but the side-effect profile of alprazolam
(Xanax) was so favorable, I stuck with that one. CAVEAT: Do not EVER mix kava with xanax, as it can cause coma, it's fairly well-documented. I assume this would apply to other benzodiazepines, although can't say for sure. People who DO like kava tell me they like a product which (i think) is called Kavatrol, or something like that. I'd be interested to hear more about your situation, and your specific goals and expectations for psychotropic substances - if you care to share that. I cant bite my tongue here, this right here always seemed to get me sooo upset. The industry recomends medication therapy,as well as cognitive therapy. One step further they provide different "professionals" for each. The talk therapy specialist will not talk a iotta about medication, reminding you its aganist the law for them to do so,i even had one or two go as far as to say they dont believe in medicine. The medication specialiast will not talk about behavioural issues,he doesent wanna hear none of that, hell your lucky if he looks you in the eye or can rember your name,he simply wants to know, and know fast what scripts he needs to write and to get you out of his office so fast your head spins. To me,the problem with this is crystal clear,if emotional disorders are a result of some chemical screw up,be it whatever chemical, whatver problem, then it is still then a pyhsical disease, and like all others should be treated with medication. What are pyshical disease even has talk therapy as an option,ulcers?....diabetes?......siezures?.....mingraines? I dont get it,if the industry wants to push medication, and have us believe in the bio chemical theory, which i do buy, then how in the world can we using logic believe talk therapy can make changes in the brain?I already hear the responses of well therapy has proved to make pyhsical changes in brain patterns. That sounds like a load of bullshit to me,medcine is gonna relieve a hemroid induced burning ,not talk therapies. The most upsetting thing to me about it all as well is most offices will require you attend therpay if you expect medication treatment,so they want you to pay for two totaly contradciting methods? I have read some where talk therapy techniques like cbt can actualy be harmful to anxiety sufferers,in a acute anxiety phase there are heated spots in the brain, the brain is under stress, and needs real relief, the last thing it needs at the moment is to be pushed into trying to perform controlled thinking, only stressing it more so. I dont know,im sure people will have rebuttals, but i cant shake the logic of seeing it as the most absurd situation. In a anxiety state the last thing i want to do is have to concentrate, and the techniques for these therapies rquires concentration.Honestly besides meds, the only thing that calms my brain down in the midst of an attack is a good wank, there is no thinking there, and it truly does calm my racing thoughts.Trying to perform cbt techniques only drive me up a wall in frustatration.
